Why MBTI? MBTI vs. DISC and other temperament assessments.

Temperament theory solely uses behavior to mark your personality and uses letters of either D-I-S-or C or an animal to identify you. The truth is to compare these to what we do, is to compare the eating of one candy bar for your daily nourishment to three well balanced meals, rich in the finest ingredients, that compliment all of the other flavors. These “candy bar” methods may fulfill your hunger for a short period of time, but will not fulfill you or give you the richness of a training that uses and applies the MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). Richer and deeper than behavior, MBTI measures your internal needs and expectations and preferences for gathering information and making decisions, what energizes you as well as how you orient yourself to the world. Behavior is only a portion, not the core. MBTI also uses type dynamics and development of psychological type to grasp a deeper understanding of yourself and others by identifying the ways in which your multiple preferences interplay and how you develop within those preferences over time or due to situations.

Designed Diversity adds another link

In some of our classes/retreats, we add the additional layer of spiritual gifts and teach the foundation of these gifts according to the Bible. These are different from the gifts of our personalities. All people have personality gifts, but those that have chosen Jesus as Lord have also been given spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit. You and I may have the same spiritual gifts, yet when our personality gifts are different, these spiritual gifts will manifest themselves in our lives in different ways. The diversity and complexity is wonderful! This is why God has a specific ministry/purpose that He has created within only YOU. Come and discover it!

History & Overview

Based on the breakthrough work of Carl Jung, the Myers-Briggs Indicator (MBTI) instrument was developed by the mother-daughter team of Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. Their vision of an uncomplicated but far-reaching instrument to provide people with insight about themselves formed the foundation for what has become the most powerful personality inventory in history. Today, the MBTI instrument is trusted by more than 30 million people in not-for-profit and profit organizations, and it is known around the world for its comprehensive depth and easy use.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) instrument is the most widely used personality assessment in the world. Formally translated into 16 languages, it is a growing force in team building, leadership and individual development in organizations. The MBTI assessment provides a description of individuals’ preferences for two cognitive activities: taking in information and organizing and processing the information in order to make decisions. People make use of their entire range of cognitive processes but tend to have a preference for using one over all the others. Much like we are right or left handed, we are born with these preferences.   Understanding these, and the role they play in people’s behavior, can help increase collaboration and improve relationships, productivity, and efficiency both personally and from a team perspective.

How the MBTI Instrument Works to Help Your Church or Organization

The MBTI instrument uses the answers to easy-to-understand questions to classify each individual as one of the 16 basic personality types. These are patterns, not pigeons holes.  There are more than 16 "types" of people. Humans are much more complex!  However, by helping all individuals discover their own personality types and learn about the types of others, we can increase their understanding of and appreciation for one another’s strengths and challenges, thereby improving their interactions. Application of the results is powerful. Combining the answers to the MBTI questions with various interpretive materials can create a pathway to new levels of cooperation, productivity, and performance throughout your church or organization.

Summary

Both forms of the MBTI instrument provide individuals who complete the assessment and the organizations who use type for development and learning with a complete system for understanding the behavior of self and others.  Understanding of type can provide insight into the behavior of self and others in a wide variety of situations, both at work and outside of work.

For ease of administration, acceptance by individuals, and ability to improve relationships, collaboration, and productivity, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument has no equal.
